MY MUSE DOESN'T CARE (read time :39) I simply want to enjoy this weekend, hang out with my wife Nancy, hit a couple BBQ’s and just let it all go for a day or two. But nooooo! My muse is exploding with endless inspiration, and my creative spirit is firing off great ideas like a pack of lit firecrackers! Neither one of them cares that it’s a 3-day weekend because they both insist that holidays were intentionally invented by the demons of distraction to keep me from doing my work. I’ve told them both I just want a day off, but they look at me puzzled: “You’re an artist,” they whisper, “artists never stop creating, never stop for anything. Screw distraction. Stay focused. You're an artist...you’re a writer...keep working your art.”Thank God I have Dropbox in my iPad and “Evernote” in my iPhone or I’d be going thru yellow pads like crazy! Any ideas on how to keep your muse and your creative spirit at bay? Any reason to?

managing the muse
Give in or Die? Nah...sometimes ya just gotta *negotiate* with the muse and offer her a reward for taking a step back..just as long as you deliver the reward and get back to the task at hand ASAP...remember, she can also distract focus from previous inspirations derived from her!HA!...And no,please do not go to Facebook, it's way too distracting and privacy intrusive...e-mails are much more manageable, I mean, there's this little button called 'delete' you can use without even opening up the message...geesh!

No boundries
when music happens you have to answer... it's elemental, and has no boundries...(except of those musicians who are still developing and can't hang). it's understood when writing, and keeping a constant note of things.

INSPIRATION
I haven't seen my muse in months. I would kill for a little inspiration. I've always found it necessary to force the issue and hope the muse shows up. You're a lucky man to have such a muse.

I believe in dreams..I believe you have them for a reason, and that we all need purpose and passion to motivate us in and through all the turmoil and trials..Staying sane and normal in it all, and developing a heart that loves..is success. :-) Rachel

The comments and post are nice to hear. It's such a funny bag of tricks when you are such a sensitive individual and you are exposed to some of the harshest and most vulnerable of enviornments...and so it is easy to self destruct...faith in a reason, and purpose for your creativity helps balance all the negatives...sometimes, I guess it refines us. TUESDAY
How great to have your creativity bubbling so close to the surface that it insists on bubbling 24/7 with no days off. No writer's block for you! what a blessing....just jot a few notes down and take it up on Tuesday, or what the heck, it's something you love, so go for it!!!

Chicken Dinner
Don't keep your Muse quiet. She'll get cranky! Bring a post-it pad and tuck little bits of words/ideas into your pocket! Since we don't control Ms. Muse, just write down the snippets and finish them later. That's the way songs "grow" in me, every time really. Good luck and tell me about your 4th BBQ! I'm cooking the most amazing chicken.

Same problem - or - is it a problem or an opportunity? This is time when the phone isnt ringing off the hook and traffic is realtively peaceful and everything stops still - so you can..... THINK!!!! and..... CREATE!!!! That's what my Muse tells (shouts) at me and I don't mind it one bit.

Being a Lifer Musician myself, I've learned not to fight this thing. It comes when it wants, and leaves when it wants. It falls like rain, and if you dont get wet, You might be in for a dry spell. So, at least catch a little in a bottle for later. It's hard with a family, but do-able, because dry spells are hell. Good Luck. Dave

MC Muse
Michael, it was an honor and a pleasure to work with you and Eric and Bud Scoppa and the entire MC crew back in the mid '80's. I was inspired by reading your farewell blog. Especially the line, "I’ve been attempting to tame the beast between my ears almost every day since then and I must say that the balance I’ve found in my life between the hoopla of rock & roll and the silence of my soul is astounding." I'll never forget the weekly meeting when you and Eric chose me to interview Frank Zappa, telling me to closely watch the clock, because he infamously would grant only 15 minutes per interview, and how you and Eric took the chance on giving me the opportunity with the strategy that even though I was the Advertising and Promotion Manager, that perhaps he would give in and converse for more than his standard 15, since I was a MUSICIAN and not a reporter. As we know, it paid off in spades and, as usual, the brilliance of your and Eric's vision at the helm created the longest interview ever granted by FZ, and a cover story to boot! I will miss you at MC, and I look forward to many more successful projects with Eric at MC and you in your new ventures. All the best! Gary

It's precisely when we let go of the duty to create that we create the most. Invite your muse to your 4th of July celebration, enjoy your time with your family, and celebrate the family man/artist in you. Smile :)

There's far worse things in this world than to come up with more ideas than you could ever hope to bring to fruition. I suffer from this wonderful disease and have come to accept that not everyone is this way and that if it were for this "suffering," the world would be a far less wonderful place to be...

I think it was Thomas Edison who said invention is 1% inspiration ..99% perspiration. (From my experience, "invention" can be replaced with any creative effort.) And I've always felt it's ok - and indeed necessary - to capture inspiration when it comes -anytime & anywhere. After all, that part's not really work! Just save the 99% for the "regular work-week".

Honor your muse
I wouldn't stop my muse for anything. It keeps me stimulated. My laptop comes on vacation with me as I can't stop writing. I equate it with passion and that's a blessing to have. If you want to turn yours off, be so busy that you can't think. I find writing relaxing and even do it on buses and trains. I even have to keep a pad by my bed so I can write stuff down in order to sleep.

The Gift
I treat my muse with honor and respect. He comes and goes as he pleases and that's just fine with me, because one thing's for sure, he's always there when I need him, and that's a gift.

Dolan's Blog
No offense because I find the blog of interest, but I'm a busy professional TOO and its too much to read too often. I get sometimes over 50 emails a day relating to my career and simply do not have the TIME to read so many other things like this. Seems like else something EVERYDAY. Not that I don't enjoy it, but it seems better suited for Facebook, etc. I read MC for news and conections. Sorry, but its abit of overkill....
