TAMING THE $$$ BEAST (Read time 1:17) Any way you calculate it, the accountant between your ears can be as loud as a 600W Marshall Stack, and the concerns about money can quickly drown out the whisper of your Creative Muse. Doesn’t matter if you don’t have much and want more; had it then lost it; or have it, and struggle to keep it. Truth is, the “money beast” can overpower and choke the flow of pure creativity, which is the life-blood of all artists & entrepreneurs. I asked my good friend Jim for his opinion. Dr. Jim Gottfurcht is an internationally recognized clinical psychologist who specializes in the psychology of money and relationships. For years we have grappled, argued, arm-wrestled and disagreed about every subject you can imagine (he with his psychological point of view, and me with my philosophical one). Makes for lively dinner conversations! However when it comes to the “psychology of money,” I respect his expertise very much. Here’s Dr. Jim’s psychological take on why it’s challenging to access your Creative Muse, while you’re being eaten alive by the Money Beast: “When you are plagued by $ problems, it usually means you are experiencing worry, stress, anxiety, fear, etc.  When these emotions run through your body, your “primitive brain” takes over and becomes dominant, and survival becomes imperative. Your ability to use the neo-cortex part of your brain is greatly diminished so you cannot think clearly or gain access to your natural creativity. To access your creativity, you must first calm down your primitive, fearful brain. Once the primitive brain calms down, the natural flow of creative intuition and inspiration is once again available.” So what’s the magic trick to calm the primitive brain? You should know the drill by now: Meditation, yoga, chanting, deep breathing, massage, aerobic exercise, being in nature, laughter, spirituality, wild crazy sex, swimming in the cold Pacific Ocean, and eating spaghetti! What’s YOUR method of silencing the “Money Beast” and accessing your Creative Muse? Big thanks to my buddy Jim. Here’s his contact info:Dr. James W. Gottfurcht, Ph. $$$ Problems and Stress
Easier said than done, ol' Buddy! Love your postings, though.

Misses the reality for some
The psychology of this is hardly the most important thing, which is that the act of survival itself can totally remove significant time, energy and most importantly, critical resources necessary to act on creative impulses in a tangible way. Because I've never been able to do anything but music, this meant decades of being a musical prostitute which became an absolute necessity for not always being a starving completely homeless person with no creative resources! So take your psychology and stuff it!! You who came up with this idiotic notion that psychology can solve this should actually try being a starving artist and the reality of it, not the damn fantasy!

$$$ WOES
I hear what you're saying about the primitive brain- that beastie is the source of a whole schwack of nasty in my life- I can't "pretend" it doesn't exist because the truth is, it does. I can"t override the precordial fight or flight that is hard wired into all of us- BUT I can strive everyday to see that fear and stress and worry for what it is. Exercise is my favorite beast master... it's a whole lot easier to acknowledge my fear and worry, put it in its place and get busy with the creative business of being an artist.

I've had a lot of it, then spent it all, now it's coming back容ven more than before. Although my "lizard brain" constantly questions and doubts my every move I have found meditation to be the big "peace keeper" between my ears.

$$$ Worries
I wish I knew, because it's eating me alive.

Money
I agree that money worries zap creativity. I must say though, that sometimes yoga, exercise, sex...whatever has to be balanced with the responsibility of paying bills. I took a part time job, working three days a week to pay the debt I incurred paying for recording, marketing, promoting, etc. We can live the artist's dream, but we also must live in the real world. There are good stories there too, among working everyday people. I'll continue to work, around my bookings when possible. Money will decide my course of action, because, regardless of point of view, we all need it to survive, and be stress free.

money and pain
I think the suffering caused by poverty or stress related to money issues can actually inspire MORE heartfelt creativity. Actually my most creative moments seem to be a result of strees and anxiety. Like if I have some money in the bank and my bills are paid I don't feel very inspired at all.

$ has always been a nudge...
I don't remember a time in my life when money was not an issue. I've been a professional musician my entire life and have found that a lack of finance is inevitably the root of the depressions I go through. As long as I have enough and a teensy weensy bit extra, I'm cool, though. I've been reading Keith Richard's autobiography and find his relationship to money very instructive in that despite the enormous financial success he has had as a musician, it has never informed his aesthetic choices. In the final analysis, I usually dismiss the money bitch and tell it to go to hell so that I can practice, write, find gigs and train for marathons. As long as my family and dogs are cool, I'm cool.

Just a little bit..
I've never pursued money, not that money is bad to have, could help a lot of people ..I have faith that I am in bigger hands. Giving it all up, I have nothing to loose and everything to gain...So far, it always just works out... As to Kingvegas, my heart goes out to you and your wife..Giving so much. There's a time for everything. Your'e awesome. Have a nice day!! Rachel

Your Money Story
I enjoy your blog, Michael. I am trying to re-write my money story - which is basically how you grew up perceiving the role money plays in your life. I am trying to redefine this for myself and give myself permission to give up the illusion that there is "never enough." Also giving myself permission to claim my value by charging what I am worth in my creative business by defining the value I bring to my clients with confidence. I do deserve to get paid what I am worth! I also love yoga and spin - they help my body align with my mind. So thank you for your insightful thoughts!

solutions
I have spent my entire life since my teens making music for a living (except for 10 years when I was doing something more "stable" -- like visual art. Right.) I have struggled, and have been very comfortable. When struggling, it makes me work HARDER to keep our household afloat. Times of little work become creative times. I've learned to live with less. Anything over that is a bonus. I've never gotten over the insecurity, but I've learned to deal with it AND stay creative. Check out my book "Gigging: A Practical Guide for Musicians" (Amazon and www.patriciashih.com). You all can do it, too.

$ STRESS...
I woke up this morning stressed about $- the pain in my head neck and shoulders reminds me that bills are behind, money is low and I'm not sure how I'm going to make enough to not only survive but thrive. My life has changed a lot in the last five years as I saw my business (students and gigs) fizzle while my wife and I took on the challenge of raising our (very challenging) niece and nephews. As of a few weeks ago we finally let go as the situation was overwhelming and sinking us. We may be financially stressed but we're safe and have the opportunity to live again. Today my mind churns with negative thoughts. I'm heading out for a run followed by a ride on my sportbike to clear my head to get to work.

I have it!
This is my first time commenting. Thank you Michael for writing such stupendous blogs. And welcome Jim, to our tribe of crazy creative geniuses. I do hope you値l return with more of your amazing knowledge. By the way, I have it and I知 keeping it.

Fear of losing it
I致e had it, lost it and now I have it again. And I知 so afraid of losing it again! I知 afraid to invest in anything. The only thing I invest in is myself; recording, equipment, rehearsals, musicians, etc. Oh, sometimes I find a great pair of shoes that I have to have:-) But I keep my money in banks because that痴 what the beast between my ears tells me to do! Michael I read every one of your blogs, thank you so much for all your insights.

I知 the guy who had it and lost it. I invested everything in the stock market in 99 and eventually lost it all. The beast between my ears beat me up for years. I got thru it eventually. I too have tried meditation and find it difficult to find peace, although I知 always open to trying it again. At this point in my showbiz career I have a great job, and great wife and family, and I can honestly say that sometimes I feel like the richest man in the world.

$$$ Stress!
This makes perfect sense, and may account for my creative block. Being more stressed out about money with increased inability to create has become a circular pattern in my life, which causes more stress! In the past, I have exercised and meditated, but abandoned the practice because I felt so pressured to create. I知 going back to them....this is a life-saving, creativity-saving insight! Thank you!
