THE BOX (Read time 0:33)
Inside The Box: where the “known” lives.
Inside The Box: the “right way to go.”
Inside The Box: common sense at work.
Inside The Box: withheld expression.
Inside The Box: requires conformity.
Inside The Box: incarcerated.
Inside The Box: where the Caterpillar dwells.
While others insist on “tried & true,” artist & entrepreneurs get anxious and antsy when confined to any kind of regular routine. And while it’s the destiny of the others to maintain the status quo, it’s the destiny of artist & entrepreneurs to climb out of the box and report back to us what they find—through their lyrics, screenplays, art, books, music, movies, websites and extraordinary products and services.
So, are you in or out?

I really needed to read this today... the unknown definitely feels scary. I am that person that is not satisfied with the 'constant' and have thought this to be a fault. Your words encourage me to use this frame of mind to my full advantage, and to become more proactive in finding new ways of manifesting realities.

Thanks Michael! I needed to read this. Especially after opening my hospital bill, from being in the emergency area for less than 2 hours to get 4 stitches on my chin. What a scam health care is here! Courage comes to me more naturally than conformity. paz!

While I appreciate really good "in the box" art, I think 'marketing it' is a lot more challenging. How does one 'stand out' doing the same old thing? Show me something that defies comparison and I'll spread the word.

I'm a 50/50 guy. When I'm working the "show" part of my career I'm out of the box. But when I do the "business" side I'm all IN!

Inovation
All inovation comes from thinking outside the box. It is the nature of human beings as tool makers. When artists do it , it is incredible. They are able to communicate through their art and inspire us to look at something in a new way giving us a new perspective. Many now well known painters and sculptures did it; often dying poor. Eistein did it. It is tough to do it as a songwriter. And the the truth is that all creative endevers require extreme discipline and craft before one can attempt to explore what is outside the box.

If you can turn "out of the box" into a paycheck it's cool. Otherwise it can be a bit challenging and scary. My answer is to follow my stream of consciousness and success in the directions that it leads me. Part of my "artistic" goals are business-related so being able to sit on both sides of the speakers helps.

As an artist, I can't confine myself to staying in the box. The artist in me can't breathe, much less create, by staying in the box.

Thanks J, always a good reminder and motivator. Left the high paying, routine of the corporate world to follow my dream of artistry and the butterfly is finding his wings. Check it out: www.ArtworkbyKaleo.com

OUT!
Thanks again J Michael. Your posts are always so thought provoking. If you're in L.A. and not busy on Saturdays, I invite you to come out to Piccolo's Books at the Howard Hughes Promenade.(FORMERLY BORDERS). I host an open mic there. Doors open a t 8:30PM and we hit at 9PM. It would be so awesome if you were to come out and share your bits of wisdom as you do here on your Blog. I'm just saying....ORACLE

Thanks for this post! Like poetry! THIS made me smile and is just what I needed to hear. I am going to print it and put it on my wall. I am SO outta here! Outta the box, if that wasn't clear. You rock, Michael!

Sometimes boxes can be useful. Even if you don't want to be confined to "the box," don't limit yourself to just outside the box. Inside the box is also tradition, and tried and true templates of how things work. Know your craft before you learn to fly. Limiting yourself to only outside the box can be just as problematic as only inside the box. Lets face it, there really is no box, just the things we do or don't do. Sometimes definitions and words can get us into a lot of trouble. Maybe defining things so rigidly as either inside or outside the box is a bit "inside the box."

Interesting how a business that was a welcoming home to the rebellious and experimentally-minded when i started in the early 70's, has become a bastion of worshipful corporate-culture and conformity as well as a technical orthodoxy and an ersatz technical "priesthood". Ugh!

I'm not the one who first said this, though I wish I were: everyone who uses the expression 'outside the box' is in the box.

Throw Away The Box
For years I've given a presentation titled, "Throw Away The Box: The TAO of Innovation & Creativity". It started when an attendee at another workshop asked what my parents had done (and what I had done with my kids) to get me to think outside the box. My response: No one ever told me there was a box.

Especially meaningful is the responsibility of artists to climb out of the box and report back to the status quo all of the magic that lurks outside the lines...

I'm definitely outside the box -- musician, novelist, playwright, band leader. I've given up waiting for my "big break". Now it's all about the ride -- which is definitely an "out of the box" attitude in this society.

I like to think of myself as being this great creative film maker who lives out of the box every day. But the truth is, I often find myself taking the safe and proves path a lot of the time, especially when I'm spending other peoples money.

I go back and forth. Is that healthy? I run a music management co. and most of the time I have to be creative on the spot and come up with ideas that are "out of the box." But as a business person I also find that it's important to make "common sense" decisions too.
