The New Marketing Dept. (Read time 0:23)
You can’t just hire someone or give the job to an already over-worked employee, or to a “promotion guy” or publicity department, then turn your back, walk away and expect them to do it all. That only gives you the opportunity to blame them for not getting it right. That’s not how it works. It begins when the phone rings and someone answers it. Or an email is promptly responded to. Or someone asks you what you do. Or a fan is noticed and acknowledged. Or an unsatisfied customer becomes more than satisfied. It begins when your art, music, movie, book, blog, band, website, product or service lands in the hands of your fans and customers. What they do for you and say about you at that point is called “Marketing.”
"You can't build a reputation on what you are going to do." — Henry Ford

Hi Michael, I know that marketing is everything and as an artist, I feel that I need that "promotion guy"... shameless self promotion is awesome and I wish I was better at it! Love your insights...Rose Knight http://youtu.be/5T4u9MHqi_o

| Is that my phone or my ears? |
"When the phone rings Is when it begins." I heard the man say. All those years of loud amps and tears Make me want to say Is that the phone or my ears ringing Another show to play? Send PR tell 'em who we are Now we're on our way!

Almost left me at the station on that one. Marketing is strategy. Advertising is tactics. Marketing starts with the product & its place in the market. Advertising is the range of tactical devices used to get awareness. Good marketing people understand this. Not many around, though. Good customer service plays into the marketing in that it is part & parcel of the brand. The brand is the cumulative effect of everything there is to know about a maker or product. It lives in the hearts & minds of the people & not in the colors of the logo or the social site. It's about people. There is no such thing as digital experience & no such thing as branding. A good attitude is just part of being a good employee in any dept.

This area, for me as an artist is one where I feel inadequate ... putting on the best show you can, that I understand, and am working on my art, if even for me to feel, at the end of the show..satisfied that I did my part. Today the bands coming over for tacos and practise!! Michael, thank you so much and have such a wonderful day! Rachel

Actually, once your product or service lands in the hands of your fans and customers, what they do for you at that point is called “Priceless.”

I had a GREAT Marketing Department--creative and committed. I Couldn't figure out why sales were so low. Then I found out one of my Disgruntled sales employees was bad-mouthing our products and his "virus" spread. I fired him and replaced him with someone more enthusiastic. Within a month, things turned around.

I'm the CEO of a company. Our weekly staff meetings include review of our products and services, focusing on problems and successes. Often I myself will initiate improvements, but I hire people who also make significant improvements. To me, excellent products and services sell themselves. Staff members who believe in these products and services ARE the best Marketing Dept.
