The thirsty man knocked on the gate, longing for a small drink, perhaps a smile, he found a feast, and a friend.

Standing at the carrefour gates, the seeker was handed a large brass ring with several keys. The master skeleton key was found to open every lock. The rest of the keys were delgated for specific purposes. "Its better to burn out then to fade away" - Def Leppard

I always disliked gatekeepers. Now that I am my own gatekeeper I wonder if I can be hard enough on myself and where do I draw the line between discretion and masochism. I am resistant to change but once I dive in the pool of hot water and I adjust to the temperature I realize how wonderful it feels. Technology is the same for me. I don't have a smart phone and I use the excuse that I don't want a device that is smarter than I am. Then I saw a guy using an Iphone with a golf ap that was very useful. Not essential but useful. What it boils down to is being cutting edge without losing the sensibilities, humanity and beauty of the past. When to dive in and when to stay out of the water. Timing and balance is everything.

Two thousand years ago lived Rebbi Akiva - the greatest Rabbi of his generation, and one of the greatest Rabbis of all time. He amassed 24,000 talmidim (students). They flocked to bask in his greatness and learn his Torah. Rebbi Akiva's talmidim were the pride of the generation. They capably carried the banner of Torah as they represented the future of Torah Judaism. Then, tragedy struck. A terrible plague appeared and ALL 24,000 talmidim died, except for 5 students. It would have been so easy to give in to despair; but, Rebbi Akiva forged on with these 5 talmidim. They eventually went on to produce the Mishnah - the backbone of the Talmud - the source of all Torah teaching to this day. We have that wonderful a

Previously, there were a mere few paths to take, only accessible by passing through the well-guarded gates. Now there is an endless circulatory system, with twists and turns and branches and collateral vessels, forging through uncharted territory. The only roadblocks are those that we create ourselves. | What The Old Gatekeepers Can teach Us |
I'm not big on current technology for musicians as far as demos go. Too many do it with digital technology. And they don't adhere to old ways of demo tapes either. Real creativity and business acumen means being creative without using digital BS, and just getting out there and grinding it out in the trenches of record labels, clubs, agents and managers. Most won't. The old talent agents, scouts and managers knew their stuff and what constituted hits and good music. And they knew pretty much automatically. And they didn't use websites or social media to promote. I think old ways of music business will come back. Most musicians want someone else or the internet to do the work. Forget that!

There are no gates when I go after my successes on my own terms. The only gate is the mental one that I put up myself on days when I flinch !! Onwards with swords held high with nary a flinch nor blink! We are all crazy MoFo's

there are different gatekeepers over here. the place definitely colors my writing, my perceptions, the off-key tone in even the happiest attempt at songs... it seems like a serious challenge to be my own gatekeeper from here and it would do nicely to have someone light the way. this is always a good blog to read even if just for the assessment of the velocity of change and what that portends. i will go record in detroit on leave in august, and i have decided to step out of the shadows of the last remaining undiscovered punk rock band in detroit and do my own album/website/ etc. then on to my own tours when i return stateside in august of 2014. maybe one of the old keepers could show me where the gate is?
