aren't we great
as much as i've long loved your blogs michael and knowing we all need encouragement to keep going,it still strikes me a bit like OMD sites.. we all think we are brilliant and more creative than most and we keep patting ourselves and each other on the back.. are we not then in danger of becoming a classic mutual admiration society? I am great, you are great, we are great - wow, aren't we special?

Gain through risk
"Risk is the artist’s favorite pallet" - I think this is so profound. We cannot be risk averse as artists, because to rack up some failures is to create stepping stones to future successes. How can you know what works best for you until you have intimately explored some of what doesn't work. So if you learn, you win, if you adventure, you achieve sooner or later and both sides of the coin result in growth.

music makes friendships
Last week I played The Rock and Roll Camp at MGM Grand in Vegas. What a joy to bring amateurs together with stars to teach them the best parts of our many years in rock. The bonus; the featured group was YES who toured with us in 1970, our friendships from back then still going strong.Friends from Eagles, Ozzie,Alice Cooper, brought joy to them, the counselors, as we jammed for hours. The final night we played The MGM for the public.I'll never forget the look on the students faces and their families as they left for home as far away as Norway, having performed and bonded with some of their favorite artists. They felt the power of music learning, making new friends and living the dream of what could have been.Still can.

Never Quit
You can't stop guys! never give up! I was reading a short article about a musician named Jasin Todd of the Band (Shinedown). Yes, that's how he spells Jasin. he was asked if he had any advice for younger players. he said to never quit. And, it didn't matter what age you were. And focus on one thing to make you money as an artist. No, that's not going to guarantee you make money, but you will focus and have clarity. Think about it, if you go in 10 directions do you think you'll gain anything? Maybe, if you have 2 people helping you constantly. So, if you're a musician, actor, writer or screenwriter--never quit!!

BRAVER, STRONGER, SMARTER with a BIG SMILE
No matter how good we think our next big thing is, YES..our doubts are our biggest traitors and our worst enemy. We have to do frequent exorcist exercises to cast this out or we would never be brave enough to take the next step. "Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat." Theodore Roosevelt

The Future and Getting There
Yes, we can see the future. What we struggle with is setting up the processes and executing the day to day logistics to make it happen.

I realize that I'm so influenced by the opinions of others. My ideas are always getting shot down at work. I work at MOCA. But the truth is those ideas are coming to me from deep within and I can't stop them. Why should I? I am surrounded every day by the work of great artists and I'm sure they were challenged by the same critics.

Braver
Sometimes I find it’s easier to look at someone else, appreciate where she Came from, how she’s grown in talent and with 100% certainty know she’s got what it takes to grow in greatness. I have to pretend that I am my own Best Friend, and look at myself from that point of view. I have to read my Own resume, including my future, and “come from” my future identity. For me, it’s who I believe I am. It’s like Lincoln as a new lawyer having the idea to liberate slaves. That’s who he was.

The future
What great wisdom! YES, we ARE focused on the future so of course we forget the past, where we came from. We have the tricky task of remembering how far we’ve come without getting stuck there in the past. Yet we have to live in the future so that our present is commitment to working to create that future.
